Shiatsu is a dynamic form of body work that supports and strengthens the natural ability of the body to heal and balance. It considers the whole person and treats not just the physical body, but also the psychological, emotional and spiritual aspects of being.
Shiatsu originated in Japan and is founded on the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). TCM theory proposes that energy, or Qi (pronounced chee), flows through the body in well defined pathways, known as meridians. Each meridian is connected to and influences an internal organ, therefore health and wellness is reliant on the smooth flow of qi through these pathways.
While Shiatsu translates literally from Japanese as "finger pressure", during a treatment, thumbs, palms, elbows, knees and feet may be used to apply pressure to various parts of the body. Pressure may be gentle or firm depending on the needs of the body and the condition being treated. A Shiatsu may utilise acupressure, stretching and gentle movement; which on a physical level stimulates circulation and the flow of lymphatic fluid; promotes the release of toxins and muscle tension; and can stimulate the hormonal system. It is a deeply relaxing experience and regular treatment can alleviate stress, illness and maintain health and wellbeing.
A Shiatsu treatment is received on the floor on a well-cushioned and comfortable futon, which facilitates relaxation through its deeply grounding nature. During the treatment the client remains fully clothed, with exception only during the use of cupping and moxibustion (moxa) therapies, in which case the client will be covered to ensure modesty and dignity are respected and maintained.
The treatment begins with a 15 minute (approximate) assessment of the client's treatment needs. As well as answering some questions related to your health history, during this process you may have your pulses taken, your tongue observed and your abdomen lightly palpated. Once a treatment plan has been established you will then enjoy a 60 minute shiatsu treatment. The session is concluded with a 15 minute (approx.) feedback of the session and any relevant lifestyle guidance (such as take-home stretches/exercises; dietary recommendations; etc.).
Shiatsu can help with a number of conditions and symptoms, such as but not limited to:
- Gynaecological conditions
- Digestive issues
- Musculoskeletal issues
- Mental health and emotional wellbeing imbalances
- Headache and migraine
Sometimes it may be appropriate (with given consent) to use cupping and/or moxa therapies during a treatment.
Cupping is a therapeutic practice in which small glass jars are placed on the skin with a suction that lightly draws the skin and superficial muscle layer into the cup. The intention is to disperse stagnation and congestion by drawing it to the surface. It is used to relieve muscle tension, promote blood and lymph circulation, detoxification and healing.
Moxa is a heat therapy in which dried plant materials are burnt close to the surface of the skin with the intention of warming and invigorating a smooth flow of qi and dispelling certain pathogenic factors. It can be useful in the treatment of pain, digestion and some gynaecological conditions.
As well as being a qualified Shiatsu Practitioner, Bec is also currently working as a Clinical Nurse Specialist in Renal Services. After completing a Bachelor of Nursing in 2008, Bec worked at St. Vincent's Public, gaining experience across a number of clinical areas and returned to work in Geelong in 2010. Since this time Bec has specialised in dialysis.
Bec began studying at The Australian Shiatsu College in 2012. Initially, it was curiosity and a need to provide health and wellness within a wholistic framework, that compelled Bec to begin her Shiatsu journey. After completing the Zen Shiatsu short course, it soon became apparent that this was more than just a hobby but a passion. Bec felt called to enrol for the Diploma of Shiatsu and Oriental Therapies, completing her studies part-time while continuing to work as a nurse. Bec completed her diploma in 2016, whilst heavily pregnant.
Bec is a mum; of one beautiful little girl. Being a woman, and having had the wonderful blessing of becoming a mother; supporting other women, wherever they are on their journey, is a passion and a priority for Bec as a Shiatsu Practitioner.
Bec enjoys spending precious time with family and friends, as well as her dog "Ruby" and her budgie "Lily". Bec likes to maintain her own wellness through yoga, regular walks, meditation, creative projects and a good sense of humour.
Bec is a fully accredited member of The Shiatsu Therapy Association of Australia.
“I had a session with Bec in her home and was so impressed by her ability to put me at ease and to dive straight into parts of my body that wanted attention. Bec is very intuitive at locating tension in the body and allowing the healing touch to flow through. She works as if she has four arms, all working towards the same goal; to soothe the body and mind. I will definitely be back.”
